COMMITTEE ON COUNTYOFFICERS & DEPARTMENTS

MONDAY, MAY 14, 2001

4:00 P.M.

 

 

PRESENT:  Chair:  LaMotte.  Members:  Oros, Pinto, Stewart-Cousins, Swanson, and Young.  Staff:  Schecter, Vita.

 

ALSO PRESENT:  Richard Wishnie, Legislator-District 9; Bill Randolph, CE Liaison

 

Mrs. LaMotte called the meeting to order at 4:15 p.m.

 

 

The minutes of Monday, April 30, 2001 were moved and approved as amended by Legislator Pinto, seconded by Legislator LaMotte, by a 6-0 vote.

 

The minutes of Monday, May 7, 2001 were moved and approved by Legislator Pinto, seconded by Legislator Oros, by a 6-0 vote.

 

The candidate scheduled for an interview for the African American Advisory Board has cancelled and will be rescheduled for another date.

 

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD:

Roone Arledge, Jr.:   Is a resident of PleasantValley and a former resident of BedfordVillage.  He is a graduate of JohnJayHigh School and the University of Greensboro North Carolina.  He has been appointed to the E.M.S. Advisory Board for the term January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2002.  For 14 years he has been employed by the City of Yonkers Fire Department and currently serves as Lieutenant-EMT Coordinating Officer.  His background includes BedfordVillage volunteer fire fighter; paramedic training; Abby Richmond and a certified EMT First responder.

 

Mr. Oros inquired about a mass destruction training program listed on his resume.  Mr. Arledge said it was a federal funded seminar that the City of Yonkers hosted to prepare a municipality in case of terrorism, nuclear destruction or any tragic events.

Mr. Wishnie asked how many are under his employ in the department.  Mr. Arledge said there are 450 firefighters in the department and they are solely responsible to respond to ALL types of calls.

 

Mrs. LaMotte said she would like to know more about the new defiberation equipment.  Mr. Arledge said the new equipment reduces the death rate of heart attacks out in the field.  The equipment has been most successful in casinos located on the West Coast and is funded by the Generoso Pope Foundation and the American Heart Association. 

 

Mrs. LaMotte would like to receive applications for her district firehouses.

 

Mrs. Swanson asked about the overall attendance rate and Mr. Arledge said attendance has been great and the Board is ready to effect change.  He is pleased that the CountyExecutive has reached out to all municipalities including the City of Yonkers.

 

Mrs. LaMotte thanked Mr. Arledge for his time and as usual, asked that he keep the lines of communication open with the committee.

 

On the motion of Legislative Cousins, seconded by Legislator Pinto, the appointment is approved by a 6-0 vote.

 

 

The committee is TENTATIVELY scheduled to meet on Wednesday, Mary 30th, at 3 p.m.  Notification will be sent prior to this date.

 

 

 

 

With no other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
