COMMITTEE ON COUNTY OFFICERS AND DEPARTMENTS

MONDAY, JUNE 19, 2000

4:00 P.M.

 

 

PRESENT:  Chair:  LaMotte.  Members:  Oros, Spreckman, Stewart-Cousins, Swanson, and Young.  Staff:  Vita, Schecter.

 

ALSO PRESENT:  Paul Ryan; Barry Kramer: candidates for Human Rights Commission.

 

Mrs. LaMotte called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.

 

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

Paul Ryan:  A Buchanan resident, an electrician by trade and appointed Business Representative of Local Union #3, in White Plains.  He is also the Secretary/Treasurer of the Westchester/Putnam Central Labor Council.  He has participated in several projects within Westchester and enjoys being involved.  He is a Vietnam Vet, a member of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 49, Pleasantville and was past County Commander and Life Member of VFW Post 375 and the American Legion Post 520 in Elmsford.  He is a Board member of the Yonkers Private Industry Council and delegate to the Westchester/Putnam Building Trades Council, as well as a member of the Village of Buchanan Planning Board.

 

Mr. Young mentioned that the Commission needs to have balance within the makeup and Mr. Ryan brings that balance with his extensive background and welcomes his input.

 

Mrs. Stewart-Cousins said she is also impressed with Mr. Ryan’s resume and welcomes his experience and perspective.

 

Mr. Oros, knowing Mr. Ryan’s background, agreed that he will bring forth the balance and perspective needed for the Commission.

 

On the motion of Legislator Oros, seconded by Legislator Andrea Stewart- Cousins, the appointment of Paul Ryan to the Human Rights Commission is approved by a 6-0 vote.

Barry Kramer:  A Scarsdale resident, nominated by Amy Paulin and appointed by the County Executive to serve on the Human Rights Commission.  He is a licensed Real Estate Sales Associate in Scarsdale.  He previously was involved with Community Services at the Loft, AIDS, Inc., and ARCs.  He has a BS in Business Administration and MBA in Marketing.  He was the Account Manager at Sieman Business Communication Systems in New York, which formulated communication solutions based on client needs and costs parameters.  He was also the Owner and President of Choice Travel in Hartsdale and President of the Garth Road Cooperative Council.

 

Mr. Kramer said he attended and spoke at several public hearing prior to the creation of the Commission and feels that the work on the Commission is very important not only for the constituents of the County but for the County as a whole.

 

Mrs. Stewart-Cousins said his background brings a lot of different hat into the mix of the Commission.

 

Mrs. LaMotte said she is please with Mr. Kramer's extensive background and wishes him well on the Board.

 

On the motion of Legislator Stewart-Cousins, seconded by Legislator Swanson, the appointment of Barry M. Kramer is approved by at 6-0.

 

Ms. Wendy Serkin who was the next interview, for the Human Rights Commission, was re-scheduled by July 10th.

 

 

 

With no other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
