COMMITTEE ON MINORITY AFFAIRS

MINUTES

FEBRUARY 25, 2002

 

 

ATTENDANCE:

 

MINORITY AFFAIRS MEMBERS:  Young, Alvarado

 

OTHERS:  Chris Chang, Tina Seckerson

 

Chairman Young called the meeting to order at 11:45 a.m.

 

DISCUSSION:

 

ORGANIZATIONAL ITEMS:

 

The Committee established a quorum of 2 members and a meeting time of 11:30 a.m. on Mondays.  Dates of meetings to be announced.

 

MLK FOUNDATION:

 

Chairman Young updated the Committee on the status of the MLK Foundation.  The Foundation will put together events to raise funding for a monument constructed in honor of Dr. King that will be placed in the atrium of the new courthouse.  The foundation is a separate and distinct organization from the Board of Legislators and is up and running.  This has been a work in progress for 2 years.  The model was voted on one year ago by the Committee.  The statue model is in the process of being refined.  The initial investment by the County was $24,000.  At the next meeting an invoice from the artist will be approved.

 

DAY LABORER’S REPORTING CENTER:

 

Committee visited the Mt. Kisco center last year.  Mr. Young stated that he hopes to visit the Maryland center within the next 6 weeks.

Chairman Young requested that Legislator Alvarado take the lead on this issue.
