COMMITTEE ON MINORITY AFFAIRS

JULY 22, 1997

Present: Chair: Clinton I. Young, Jr. Members: Lois Bronz, Bob

Darcy, Secretary: Lynne Creighton Staff: Dan Rodriguez

 

The meeting was called to order at 12:25 P.M. by Mr. Young.

 

Mr. Young addressed the delay by County Attorney Marilyn Slaatten in responding to his first memo, which expressed the committee’s concern that the proposed legislation on women-owned businesses had not been forthcoming, although Ms. Slaatten promised to have the information by mid-July, and his second memo, stating his concern that there was still no response or information forthcoming regarding this matter.

 

Mrs. Bronz suggested sending another memo, asking for a time frame and a reason for the delay.

 

Mr. Young next addressed a memo he received from Dan Rodriguez with an attached letter, regarding an anti-bias incident that took place in Dobbs Ferry on July 4, 1997.

 

Mr. Rodriguez said that he tried to contact Mayor Marra, but that his calls have not been returned as of yet.

 

Mr. Darcy, who chairs the Committee on Public Safety, would like the matter referred to his committee and Mr. Young said he would send a memo to Mr. Darcy requesting that his committee address certain issues regarding the anti-bias incident.

 

Mr. Young said he would write both the Mayor and Chief Longworth, stating the committee’s concerns regarding this matter. The Chair

will also invite the Hispanic Police Organization in so the committee can become familiar with this organization.

Mrs. Bronz asked Mr. Rodriguez to see if Piero Olcese received a response to his letter to Chief Longworth, dated July 16 regarding this incident and Mr. Rodriguez responded that he would check to see if there is any updated information or if any communication has gone out.

 

After the discussion ended on this matter, Mr. Young said he would like to invite Dr. Hankin, President of Westchester Community College, to the next committee meeting, which will be on August 12.

 

The minutes of July 15 were approved on motion of Mrs. Bronz, seconded by Mr. Darcy, passed by a vote of 3-0.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 12:45 P.M. by Mr. Young, seconded by Mr. Darcy, passed by a vote of 3-0.
