DRAFT MINUTES COMMITTEE ON MINORITY AFFAIRS JULY 15, 1997 12 NOON
PRESENT: Chair: Clinton I. Young, Jr. Members: Lois Bronz Bob Darcy, Secretary: Lynne Creighton
The meeting was called to order at 12:05pm by Mr. Young.
Mr. Darcy made a motion to approve the minutes of July 8, seconded by Mr. Young, passed by a vote of 3-0.
Mr. Young mentioned a protest that was staged by Minority Affairs at K-Rock Radio Station, 40 W. 57th St. on July 10, due to remarks that were made by one of the stations disk jockeys in desecrating the memory of Dr. Betty Shabazz.
Mrs. Bronz said that the remark made by disk jockey Booker Madison, that "these tickets are hotter than Betty Shabazz", was unacceptable and insensitive, and although he issued an apology it was worse than the insult.
Mrs. Bronz also said that the committee decided to take additional action by staging a demonstration, joined by several other organizations, and that the committee received a copy of a subsequent apology from the General Manager as well as Mr. Madison.
Mr. Young said that the demonstration was successful and was satisfied with the second apology.
Mrs. Bronz asked Lynne to get a copy of the news article that was printed in the Daily News and the New York Post.

Mr. Young relayed to the committee that he had sent another request to County Attorney Marilyn Slaatten to express the committees concern regarding the proposed legislation on women-owned businesses, and the fact that no information has been forthcoming.
Mrs. Bronz suggested waiting another week before taking any further action.
The committee would like to invite Dr. Hankin, President of Westchester Community College, to a meeting, but no date has been set.
With no further business to discuss, Mr. Darcy entertained a motion to adjourn at 12:30pm, seconded by Mrs. Bronz, passed by a vote of 3-0.
