DRAFT MINUTES COMMITTEE ON MINORITY AFFAIRS OCTOBER 15, 1996 12 NOON
PRESENT: Chair: Clinton I. Young, Jr. Members: Lois Bronz, Bob Darcy Legislator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Lynne Creighton Dr. B. R. McClure, McClure & Associates
The meeting was called to order at 12 Noon by Mr. Young..
The minutes of October 8 were approved on motion of Mr. Young, seconded by Mrs. Bronz, by a vote of 3-0.
Mr. Young said the committee would discuss the following agenda item at the next meeting, which will be held on October 29th at 12Noon:
Agenda Referral 1DD- Hon. Kay Carsky - Forwarding a request for a resolution of support for the proposal to build a memorial dedicated to all the women who served in the United States Armed Forces. (10.7.96)
Dr. McClure gave a presentation on the Amway Corporation.
Some of the major points she brought out were:
* Amway has more than 2 1/2 million distributors in 70 countries worldwide and more than 7 billion dollars in sales.
* Amway has become the corporate network of 400 Fortune 500 companies with access to over 7,000 goods and services (e.g. GM, MCI, Visa, Toshiba, etc.) * Amway is the number one foreign company operating in Japan.
* Amway offers the minority entrepreneur exceptional business opportunities in the current economic climate.
* Designated by the White House as 1 of 3 U.S. corporations having significant world-wide economic impact.

After Dr. McClures presentation, it was determined that she should be referred to Ed Dowdy, Director of Affirmative Action, who in turn could put her in touch with the commissioners to get on the bid list and help her obtain information regarding contracts and proposals.
Mr. Young entertained a motion to adjourn at 12:50pm, moved by Mrs. Bronz and seconded by Mr. Darcy, approved by a vote of 3-0. |
