COMMITTEE ON MINORITY AFFAIRS

JULY 23, 1996

The meeting was called to order at 12 Noon by Mr. Young.

 

The minutes of July 9, 1996 were approved on motion of Mr. Darcy, seconded by Mr. Young by a vote of 2-0 (Mrs. Bronz was not present for the vote).

 

Mr. Young entertained a motion to approve the revised Resloution on Tara Circle, moved by Mr. Darcy and seconded by Mrs. Bronz. The resolution will be voted on at the August 19 Board meeting.

 

Ms. Douglas gave an overview of her organization, saying that the African American Chamber of Commerce is designed to meet the community needs and is a voluntary organization of individuals and businesses who came together to advance the commercial, financial, industrial and civic interest of the community.

 

She said the mission of the organization is to promote the economic and community well-being of theAfrican-American Business community in Westchester and Rockland Counties. The Chamber conducts regular educational seminars and workshops for members with topics ranging from financial planning, marketing and business management.

 

Ms. Douglas said that her organization is planning a 1998 Business Expo in the County and Mrs. Bronz suggested that she contact Larry Dwyer at the Westchester Business Partnership, for possible financial aid.

Mrs. Bronz also told Ms. Douglas that it was suggested by Mayor Davis that the Minority Contractor’s Association be a conduit for demonstration projects for effectively tapping into the investment dollars

that are available through the State Office of Banking.

 

Ms. Douglas said she contacted the New York/New Jersey Minority Purchasing Council who asked her to hold seminars in the County to get minority vendors certified, and that many of the major corporations use the NY/NJ Minority Purchasing Council as a clearinghouse for finding different firms to link with major corporations in relation to vendor programs.

 

After further discussion on this subject Mr. Young thanked Ms. Douglas for her presentation and asked her to keep the committee abreast of any new developments.

 

Mr. Young said that he had met with Mr. Kirven of the Empire State Development Corporation and extended an invitation to him to meet with the committee some time in the next few weeks.

 

Mr. Darcy said that he was waiting to get the Personnel Policy and Procedures Manual so that the committee could proceed with setting up indoctrination on sexual harrassment.

 

Mrs. Bronz addressed the issue of Niger Innis’ name being brought up once again for a seat on the the Community College Board, and said that she would like to be present at the County Officers and Departments meeting when it was presented to them.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 12:35 pm on motion of Mr. Young and seconded by Mr. Darcy by a vote of 3-0.
