COMMITTEE ON MINORITY AFFAIRS

APRIL 23, 1996

The meeting was called to order at 12:05 P.M.

 

The minutes of April 16 were approved on motion of Mrs. Bronz and seconded by Mr. Young by a vote of 2-0.

 

There was a discussion on the upcoming Minority Vendor Fair.

 

Mr. Young wanted to know how to inform people of this event and Mrs. Monahan said there was a mailing list from last year’s committee on Minority Affairs and

Mr. Dowdy suggested utilizing the Directory of Minority and Women-Owned Businesses.

 

Other highlights of this discussion:

** The County Executive will co-sponsor this event.

** Mrs. Bronz said this will be a good opportunity for the County Executive

to talk about the Executive Order.

** The committee would like to schedule this event for Wednesday,

September 18 or Thursday, September 19, from 7 - 9:30 P.M.

** Lynne will make catering arrangements and Mrs. Monahan said

that the County caterers have to be used.

** Mrs. Bronz will mention the affair at the Breakfast Club meeting on

Tuesday, May 7th at 8:00 A.M.

** Barbara Monahan will try to get the Westchester Business Partnership

to co-sponsor and will also contact Larry Dwyer from the Westchester

County Association.

** Mr. Young would like to get the Asian community involved and Mrs.

Bronz suggested Fuji as a sponsor; Mr. Dowdy suggested Mitsubishi

and both Mrs. Bronz and Mrs. Monahan provided the names of contacts.

Mr. Young asked Lynne to contact the Hispanic Advisory Board and Mrs. Bronz suggested that the committee on Minority Affairs attend a meeting of the African American Advisory Board and the Hispanic Advisory Board, as a way of introducing the committee to these boards.

 

Mr. Dowdy said they both meet the first Monday of each month.

 

Lynne will set up a meeting with Minority Affairs, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, George Latimer and Bill Straubinger of the Volunteer Center. The topic is Recruitment for 1996-1997 class of Leadership-Westchester program: looking for African-Americans and other minorities.

 

Mrs. Bronz would like to see minorities involved with County contracts and Mr. Young said he will write to the co-chairs of the committee on Budget and Appropriations on behalf of the committee on Minority Affairs, with reference to

this matter.

 

On motion of Mrs. Bronz and seconded by Mr. Young, the meeting was adjourned at 12:45 P.M. by a vote of 2-0.
