COMMITTEE ON MINORITY AFFAIRS

FEBRUARY 20, 1996

PRESENT: Chairman: Clinton I. Young, Jr.: Member Lois Bronz

Secretary: Lynne Creighton

The meeting was called to order at 12:05 PM by Chairman Young.

On motion of Mrs. Bronz and seconded by Mr. Young, the minutes of February 15 were approved.

There was a discussion on the long-range objectives of the committee.

Mr. Young feels that one of the objectives should be that County government is not just user-friendly to the minority community but are full participants throughout the entire process, focusing on economics, educational aspects and personnel within the County.

Mrs. Bronz gave Mr. Young a summary of the seminar on How to Do Business with the County, which represented a broad cross-section of minorities, mostly small-business venture persons and for-profits, who were put in touch with various County departments. Regarding the second seminar, How To Do Business In The County, Mrs. Bronz explained that it was co-hosted with local banks and presenters and focused on how to get financial support to start a business.

The third and upcoming seminar will showcase successful minority entrepreneurs, and Mrs. Bronz asked Lynne to invite Jamie Hastings to

the next committee meeting to help with the logistics.

Mr. Young would like the committee to meet with the Minority Business Association, as well as the Latino community, and would like a presentation by senior administrative officials on doing business with the County.

The committee will decide on a date, time and format and will ask the administration to get presenters such as Public Works and General Services.

Mr. Young wanted to know how to contact women-owned businesses and Mrs. Bronz informed him of the Directory on Minority and Women-Owned Businesses, commissioned and paid for by the County.

Mrs. Bronz asked Lynne to check with Delphi Consulting, who is updating the directory.

Mr. Young will talk to Joe Delfino, Chair of County Officers and Departments, with respect to prequalification on the agenda for COD.

The committee would like to invite Tony Giambruno to a meeting with respect to staffing and asked Lynne to coordinate it with Gina Angiulo.
