HEALTH AND MEDICAL COMMITTEE MINUTES, June 4, 1996
MEMBERS: Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Ursula La Motte
STAFF: Donald K. Sandford, Dolores Heredia
GUEST: Mona Markus (A.L.L.),Valerie Goldstein (WCHD), Jo Brill (LWVW), George Hosey
The meeting commenced at 2:20 PM.
The first order of business was a presentation by Ms. Mona Markus on Lyme Disease. The Louis Calder Center and the American Lyme Disease foundation have created an index of high risk areas. Out of a zero to ten index, Westchester County is at index number 9. Not only is this an extremely high number, but also there are two generations of ticks that are carrying Lyme decease and Ehrlichiosis as well.
Ms. Markus pointed out how recently the MetroNorth was held liable for their workers who were afflicted with this disease. Ms. Markus feels that the County will also be liable if the proper signs are not displayed. The signs should be prominent with a picture of a tick and the word "warning" on the sign. The signs should be in parks, along trails and most importantly visible.
In addition, Ms. Markus discussed the lack of factual education to physicians. Most doctors still believe a rash and fever are a sign of the decease; however, the latest research disproves this theory. Ms. Markus feels doctors are not attending Medical conferences. Valerie Golstein mentioned a 2000 physician mailing on this issue. Leg. Stewart-Cousins questioned how many doctors attended. Ms. Goldstein will get back to Committee with those numbers.
The next order of business was the minutes of May 28, 1996. Leg. La Motte motioned to approve the minutes, second by Leg. Stewart-Cousins. All in favor [2-0]
The next order of business was item number 3. Leg. La Motte motioned to receive and file, second by Leg. Stewart-Cousins. All in favor [2-0]
Motion to adjourn by Leg. Stewart-Cousins, second by Leg. La Motte. The meeting adjourned at 3:20 PM.
