Pediatric Emergency Care Survey

Mr. Noto asked if anyone present had any suggestions on how to deal with the local hospitals in a more productive manner.  Dr. Yuknek said at the last meeting it was suggested that she ask the pediatricians at each hospital to speak to those in their Emergency Departments.  But she said she felt it might be viewed negatively coming from her.  Mr. Volk said he felt it well be very hard to get objective information from the hospitals, they will always attempt to protect their best interest.

response to Mr. Noto’s question Mr. Volk said the fact that less than 10% of emergency calls will be pediatric is a factor.  He added nationally some changes are being made, but it usually takes 2-3 years after the nation standard is established for New York State to conform to that standard, on an EMT level.  Mr. Volk said the State EMS Council oversees the approval process.  He added it would be possible to require a specific number of pediatric hours as part of the emergency personnel licensing process.

After much discussion it was decided to invite both Chief John Kapica, President of the EMS Council and Dr. DeRobertis, Chair of the Hudson Valley MAC in to discuss the proposed training center and the designation of specific CME hours for pediatric courses, as well as drafting letters recommending both suggestions.

It was decided to table the discussion of the video-conferencing suggestion until a later date.

Dr. Yuknek said it was suggested to her, the Committee wait until Westchester is established, as it’s own Emergency Region, and use that body as support in any future approach of local hospitals.

With nothing further to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 3:20 p.m.
