COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT

DISCUSSION:
The meeting was called to order at
Chair introduced Joseph Alonzi, a candidate for appointment to the Pest Management Committee. Mr. Alonzi gave a brief description of his background qualifications and expertise to assist the PMC, especially in the area of golf turf maintenance. The appointment was granted, and a motion to approve was moved by Legislator Pinto, seconded by Chair Kaplowitz, and carried with all in favor.
Chair announced that a press conference has been scheduled for the Agricultural & Farmland Protection Board (AFPB), on Tuesday, July 17th. The announcement will be made with regard to the establishment of the districts. The AFPB Board will start its eight-year term on July 19, 2001. The Environment Committee will meet at the press conference, once the location is confirmed. Chair noted that Tom Anderson’s newspaper article and County Executive Spano, has been credited for taking the initiative to generate interest (in the farming community) with the idea of establishing an AFPB.
The new agenda items were discussed next, with emphasis that the correspondence regarding the AFPB (#48-01) would be forwarded to

Board Chairman Latimer. The Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan contains a grant application with procured funds, required from the County, in the total amount of $50,000. $30,000 from special studies (Planning Dept.), $10,000 in-kind services, plus an additional $10,000, which requires not actions, except for a letter of support in from the Chairman of the BOL Mr. Latimer, to request the available funds. Once the money is received, the Plan would be developed by the Planning Department and the Ag/Farm Board, then a required public hearing would be set, and eventually, voted by the BOL.
Chair read correspondence from Roberta Wiernik (Pres. LWV), regarding Storm Water and Waste Water Management (in WC), who will be launching an public education program on this issue, to begin in the Fall. Steve was requested to schedule a meeting for sometime in September.
With regard to Environmental Justice (#49-01), Steve Bass was requested to schedule a joint meeting in September, with the Committee on Minority Affairs to discuss in detail.
With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 3:56 p.m., on the motion of Legislator Pinto, seconded by Legislator Maisano.
