COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Tuesday, August 1, 2000

DISCUSSION:

Chair Kaplowitz called the Environment Committee to order at 3:15 p.m. with a quorum and reviewed the minutes of July 11th.  The minutes were approved with a minor correction, on the motion of Legislator Pinto, seconded by Chair Kaplowitz.  (Legislators LaMotte and Maisano were out for the vote.)  The Committee calendar was also reviewed, and Chair noted that there are no further meetings until September 5th.  The “upcoming meeting” schedule can be found on the last page of the Environment Committee Agenda.

 

Chair Kaplowitz then introduced Marion Nangle, who submitted a receipt for delivering 1,087 signed petition letters to Gina D’Agrosa (Planning Department), on behalf of Karen Schultz, in opposition to any expansion at the Westchester County Airport.  The petitions shall remain on file, and a copy submitted to the Board agenda for its next meeting.

 

Marian Rose presented a prepared statement proclaiming all of the New York Watershed and reservoirs/wetlands as critical resource areas.  She also stated that she would like the NYS/Department of Environmental Conservation to become more involved in the watershed areas.  Chair Kaplowitz suggested preparing a letter or resolution in support of this effort.  Legislator Maisano entertained a motion to move forward with a

letter, then follow with a resolution.  The motion was moved by Legislator Maisano, seconded by Legislator LaMotte, all in favor - with a vote of 4-0.

 

Lastly, the subcommittees were briefly reviewed.  Legislator LaMotte expressed that she would like to hold another re-organization meeting for the subcommittee on Mass Transit, since the first meeting was held during a lengthy discussion of open space.  Legislator Maisano noted that the subcommittee on the Long Island Sound will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, August 9th.

 

With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m.
