MINUTES

COMMITTEE ON COMMUNITY AFFAIRS AND HOUSING

MARCH 11, 1996

PRESENT: Chair Bronz, Leg. Stewart-Cousins

ALSO PRESENT: Mr. Swee and Mrs. Keating

ITEMS DISCUSSED:

Chair Bronz called the meeting to order at 1:15 P.M. On motion of Leg. Stewart-Cousins, seconded by Chair Bronz, the minutes of March 4, 1996, were approved 2-0.

Chair Bronz reminded Leg. Stewart-Cousins that we will be meeting again on Wednesday with Ms. Hastings to discuss the IMA at Yorktown Country Inn.

Chair Bronz stated that Mr. Raymond has contacted her regarding the vacancies on the Housing Opportunity Commission. She suggested that we find out the composition of the Committee and then move on to fill the vacancies.

The Committee discussed Leg. Stewart-Cousins’ referral regarding the possibility of Section 8 recipients being steered to Southwest Yonkers. A study was conducted and it was concluded that steering is not occurring, but that is where most landlords live that accept Section 8 certificates. Leg. Stewart-Cousins stated that she would like to see this Committee seriously look into the situation and make other municipalities do their fair share.

Chair Bronz mentioned that during her discussion last week with Comm. Oliva, she stated that the Planning Department will be happy to assist the Committee with presentations in different communities. Chair Bronz also suggested that we showcase successful housing projects around the County.

She also suggested that we might print up a small brochure citing Section 8 and who is taking it and who is not.
