George Oros

Minority Leader

Westchester County Board of Legislators

Legislator - District 1

George Oros was first elected to the Westchester County Board of Legislators in 1995. He served as Chairman of the Board in 1996-97 and recently as Minority Leader. He is currently the Minority Whip of the Republican Caucus. He is a member of the Board’s Committee on Legislation, the Committee on Budget and Appropriations, the Committee on Community Affairs and the Special Committee on Housing.

Oros, a Republican-Conservative, has worked successfully to improve the bi-partisan working relationship that has been a hallmark of the Board in recent times. He has also taken a leadership role in strengthening ties between the County and its municipalities. Keeping in mind the legislature’s role in the checks and balances system of a two-part government, Oros has a reputation as a diligent reviewer of contracts and budgets.

A determined tax-cutter and fiscal reformer, Oros has also waged successful battles to ensure tax equity. For example, he was instrumental in removing thousands of Cortlandt and Yorktown residents from a sewer district to which they were paying taxes even though they had no sewers.

Before his election to the legislature, Oros was a member of the Cortlandt Town Board from 1991 until 1995. Prior to serving as a Town Councilman, Oros was the Chair of the Cortlandt Zoning Board of Appeals and of the Town’s Bi-Centennial Committee in 1988. He also was Cortlandt’s Assistant Town Attorney.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Oros came to Westchester to attend Pace University in Pleasantville where he earned his BBA degree. He received his J.D. Degree from Pace University Law School, studying at night and working during the day as Assistant to the Director of Pace’s Michaelian Institute of Sub/Urban Governance. During his eight year tenure with the Institute, Oros was intimately involved with projects ranging from the creation of new villages to welfare reform.

Oros has lived in Cortlandt for 24 years and is a former member of the Town’s Master Plan Committee and the Chamber of Commerce Executive Board. He is a member of the Hudson Valley Hospital Center Board of Directors and the co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, a Cortlandt historical organization. Since 1980 he has been married to the former Marianne Baggini. The couple has two children, John and Christina.
