George Latimer

Westchester County Board of Legislators

Immediate Past Chairman

Legislator - District 7

George Latimer of Rye City is serving in his sixth term as Westchester County Legislator from the 7th District, which includes all of Rye City, Mamaroneck Town and Village, Larchmont, and part of New Rochelle. First elected to the County Board in 1991, he was re-elected with over 60% of the vote in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001. He is the first Democrat to be elected to the 7th District seat, following a four year term as Rye City Councilman (elected in 1987). He has been cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party in recent re-election bids.

The 48-year old legislator was selected as Chairman of the Board of Legislators by vote of the Board in January 1998 for the 1998-99 term and in January 2000 for the 2000-01 term. Previously, he served as the Board’s Minority Leader for the 1996-97 term, following his tenure as Minority Whip in the prior 1994-95 term. Over the years, he has been a member of the committees on Budget and Appropriations, Public Safety and Criminal Justice, County Officers and Departments, Public Works, Environment, Legislation and Rules. He currently chairs the Labor Committee.

During his eleven years as legislator, Latimer has taken the lead on a number of key initiatives to improve the environment, tighten ethical rules and cut taxes. He has been a staunch supporter of strong environmental initiatives, and has worked to restrain County spending, evidenced in a string of budgets passed with low tax increases, and a tax decrease.

Latimer is a native of Mount Vernon, where he attended public schools, and is a graduate of Fordham University (BA 1974), and New York University (MPA 1976). He is the son of the late Loretta (Miner) and Stanley Latimer, both long-time Westchester residents.

Professionally, Latimer is a marketing executive. He has previously worked for subsidiary companies of Nestle and ITT. In his home community, he has been an active volunteer, serving as a member and on the Boards of numerous groups, including terms as Chairman and President of the United Way of Rye. He is a parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye.

Latimer is well-known in his home community and district for providing an energetic representation that includes holding monthly District Office hours around the region; weekend door-to-door walking tours to hear resident concerns; and active attendance at local city, town and village board and council meetings to provide updates on County issues. Legislator Latimer lives in Rye City with his wife and daughter.
