Letter from President Christie McEvoy-Derrico

April 15, 2008

Dear Members and Friends,

Coming out of a somewhat quiet winter season, your local League has begun a busy spring filled with events.

Our Environmental Committee chair, Beth Radow, has been busy at work with several great events. On March 27th she brought together another fabulous panel at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck to discuss the topic, "Protecting the Value of Your Home and Our Long Island Sound Watershed Communities: A Regional Perspective on Water Quality Management and Flood Control." Once again Beth produced an educational event which was well attended by our community leaders and which will hopefully influence public policy on water related issues affecting where we live. Beth has continued her environmental activities during Green Week. On April 14th the League presented the Discovery Channel movie "Addicted to Oil" narrated by New York Times columnist, Thomas Friedman. This event was co-sponsored by the Mamaroneck High School who also provided the venue. Please see the list of other Green Week community events taking place April 13 to 18.

After seven (7) months of planning and organizing a series of five (5) in-depth forums on immigration issues, our local Immigration Study Committee, headed by Alice Bloom, completed the League's National Immigration Study with a Consensus Meeting being held on January 26. On April 1, 2008 the National League presented a formal position that the LWV will use to advocate and lobby for governmental reform. Click HERE to read that position. This will be presented at the National Convention in Portland, Oregon from June 13-17.

Our annual Spring Luncheon will once again take place at the Davenport in New Rochelle on May 2nd at noon. Please see the luncheon invitation to make sure we receive your RSVP to reserve your seat. Our speakers will be Michael Edelman and Lawrence Otis Graham from Westchester’s Channel 12 News. News 12 will broadcast the event. Town of Mamaroneck Supervisor, Valerie O’Keeffe will introduce our speakers who will address “The Press and the Election: Who is Manipulating Whom?” No doubt this will be a lively discussion in light of the current election climate.

Finally, our Annual Meeting will take place on June 4th at 7:00 pm at the home of Peggy Jackson, and will be open to our members. We will be voting in our new Board and voting in a new League President.

I hope to see everyone at one of our upcoming events.

Sincerely yours,

Christie McEvoy-Derrico
President LWV-LM
